PRESS RELEASES

Violent Storm, whose new album “Storm Warning” was released on October 23rd, have announced that Martin Mickels will be joining the band when they tour in 2007. Martin, currently the lead guitarist with Gary Barden’s band, Statetrooper, will be playing the parts performed on the album by rock luminaries Yngwie Malmsteen and KK Downing. Of course he is no stranger to stepping into the shoes of guitar gods … in Statetrooper he replaced Brian Robertson, and regularly plays the guitar parts co-written and performed by Michael Schenker, for the MSG tracks performed by Statetrooper.

The Band: CAPDOWN
The Release: ‘KEEPING UP APPEARANCES’ / ‘SERIOUS IS NOT A SIN’
The Formats: LIMITED EDITION 7” & DOWNLOAD
The Release Date: 4TH DECEMBER 2006
The Label: fierce panda (The Catalogue Number: NING 195)

**Legendary fivepiece Capdown return to the hustle and bustle of the nation’s record racks next month with their first physical release for several light years. ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ is a brand new track and, as a strictly limited seven inch release, marks another significant stepping stone towards the band’s eagerly awaited third album, ‘Wind-Up Toys’, due early next year.

**With the closeknit line-up of Jake (vox / sax), Boob (bass), Keith (guitar / vox) and Tim (drums) now augmented by newcomer Eddie (keyboards / samples) ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ continues what is turning out to be one heck of a raucous Capdown comeback. Over the past six years the Milton Keynes outfit have consistently and heroically energised the homegrown UK underground scene, supporting everyone from Hundred Reasons and A through to Reel Big Fish, Bad Religion and Less Than Jake and releasing two albums (‘Civil Disobedients’ and ‘Pound For The Sound’) to feverish acclaim.

**Indeed, so strong were the foundations laid by the band by all that touring that in spite of spending a fair old chunk of the past two years writing and recording the ‘Wind-Up Toys’ album, the 2006 Carling Festival proved that Capdown remain as enervating a live draw as ever before with the biggest crowd for the Lock-Up stage on the Saturday afternoon at Reading. After that sunny success came the download-only release of ‘Home Is Where The Start Is’ in September, which happily coincided with a Radio One Lock-Up session.

**Even more happily, ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ and the other eleven new songs which comprise ‘Wind Up Toys’ still retain that authentic ska sparkle yet with Larry Hibbitt at the production desk there is a new hard rock ferocity to the set which will become bruisingly apparent when the band head out on this super selective low-key tour…

REVIEWS

ASIA ‘The Definitive Collection’ Universal (2006) www.universalchronicles.com

Nothing like another Asia compilation although at least time there is an excuse as the original line-up of John Wetton, Geoff Downes, Steve Howe and Carl Palmer are back together and currently touring. This sixteen song compilation is hardly definitive though and you’d be better off buying the double CD ‘Best Of’ released by Universal last year. That one contains tracks that were not featured on the standard studio albums. The only track on here fans may not have is the remix of ‘Go’ from the ‘Astra’ album that came on the 12” single release. Also from the ‘Now & Then’ compilation from 1990 the excellent ‘Days Like These’ is included as well. Otherwise its five songs apiece from ‘Asia’ and ‘Alpha’ plus four songs from ‘Astra’. You can’t go wrong with classics like ‘Heat Of The Moment’, ‘Don’t Cry’ and ‘Here Comes The Feeling’ but if you have yet to sample the pomp rock delights of Asia I’d steer you towards the double CD ‘Best Of’ as this collection is hardly ‘definitive’.

STYX & THE CONTEMPORARY YOUTH ORCHESTRA ‘One With Everything’ Frontiers (2006) www.frontiers.it

The CD version of the concert also available on DVD, although this CD doesn’t feature the two newly recorded Christmas tunes. But you do get two new songs on here in the shape of the studio recording ‘Just Be’, a gentle ballad with ethereal keys and soaring guitars – very progressive. Then there is ‘Everything All The Time’, a more straight ahead rocker driven with those trademark Styx harmony choruses. As with the DVD the set list features many cover versions from last year’s ‘Big Bang Theory’ album, including ‘I am The Walrus’, which sounds so much batter with the orchestra backing and ‘I Don’t Need No Doctor’, which again takes on a new life with added orchestral backing. Of course the Styx classics are there including ‘Renegade’, ‘Boat On The River’ and a rocking ‘Blue Collar Man’ which starts the CD of in fione style.
My advice is get both the CD and DVD as they are essential for all Styx fans!

HEADRUSH ‘Livin’ In A Fantasy’ Rock Revival Records (CDS 2007) www.heardrushrocks.co.uk

Now this band come from my hometown of Stoke, birthplace of Slash, Lemmy and the might Demon (and that Port Vale supporting wimp Robbie Williams!), so I could be excused for bias but this band ROCK! Yes it has been done before but rarely this well and believe you me we have a UK Buckcherry here! This band are like Motley Crue should sound today, big guitar riffs, a vocalist with a real raw power in Andy Law and of course tunes that refuse to leave your head after one play.
This single isn’t out until January but visit their website and get the EP. They blow the newer bands like Rattlesnake Remedy and Roadstar out of the water… Play loud and enjoy!
