REVIEWS

Rose Hill Drive “Showdown” Single (Megaforce)

Rose Hill Drive have released 3 tracks- well actually the single version, live version and demo version of the track “Showdown”, of energetic blues rock. Guitar driven and well written, tracks like this should see them given the same press as The Answer. The band tour the UK in March.

Nikk Gunns 3 out of 5.

Alex Skolnick Trio “Last Day In Paradise” Magnatude (Cat No MT-2312-2)

Testament guitarist Alex Skolnick has put together a 10 track jazz-rock CD, which ranges from the extremely jazzy “Channel 4” to the jazzy instrumental version of the Rush classic “Tom Sawyer”- there is even “Practica Lo Que Predicas” (Spanish for the Testament track “Practice What You Preach”, again done in a jazz style). The highlight here is the Sabbath like “Western Sabbath Stomp” which features some great guitar work.
A laid back album that will not appeal to all hard rock fans.

Kiko Loureiro “Universo Inverso” Fuel Records (Cat No FUEL514CD)

Kiko Loureiro has released an instrumental album that combines jazz, classical and Brazilian styles. The highlights amongst the 10 tracks here include the Brazilian flavoured “Feijao De Corada”, the holiday feel of “Samba Da Elisa” and “Monday Mourning”, complete with its haunting piano opening.
Laid back but in a way that you can relax with it playing in the background.

THRESHOLD ‘Dead Reckoning’ Nuclear Blast (2007) www.nuclearblast.de

Following on from 2004’s excellent ‘Subsurface’ album released via Inside Out Threshold are now signed to Nuclear Blast. It will interesting to see how they market the band as really are one of the best UK bands around in any genre at the moment.
For this album they have added a darker edge lyrically and added even more harmony vocal parts (just listen to ‘Elusive’ for some cracking arrangements). They really do progress on each album, whilst keeping their core sound intact. ‘Slipstream’ is possibly their best song yet – great riffing from guitarist/producer Karl Groom, wonderful vocal delivery from Andrew ‘Mac’ MacDermott (with Dan Swano adding growls on this track and ‘Elusive’). Special mention to Richard West who lays down some phenomenal keyboard runs notably on ‘This Is Your Life’ and ‘Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams’ (the latter is brooding epic with plenty of time changes and solos to keep the listener interested). ‘Fighting For Breath’ again melds intense riffs with keyboards galore. If you have yet to try this band I suggest starting here as it encompasses all that is great about this band.
Threshold should reach a whole new audience with this album as the music is very accessible yet with enough twists and turns to keep you coming back for more. Can’t wait to hear these songs played live!
